Penn Relays lead to changes in top girls track marks

The 117th Penn Relays were responsible for several changes in this week's USA girls high school track and field top performers list:

Haley Pierce of The Tatnall School (Wilmington, Del.) set a junior class record in the 3,000 meters, 9 minute, 16.35 seconds – also making her the No. 8 overall all-time high school performer.

Fayetteville-Manlius (Manlius, N.Y.) needed the No. 5 all-time distance medley relay time, 11:34.46, to hold off North Shore (Glen Head, N.Y.), which ran No. 7 all-time, 11:36.10, thanks to a 4:45.84 anchor 1,600 meters by Samantha Nadel.

Alexis Franklin of Old Mill (Millersville, Md.) ran the 400-meter hurdles in 59.07 to become the first U.S. high school runner to break 60 seconds this season.

Long Beach Poly had two leading girls relay marks: in the 4x100, 45.23, and in the 4x800, 8:59.72. (The Poly boys also turned in a leading outdoor mark in the 4x800, 7:31.69 – which is No. 3 all time, missing the national record by just a second.)

The evening before the Relays got under way, the only outdoor national record of the season to date was set in the pole vault, 14-2 3/4, by Morgann LeLeux of Catholic (New Iberia, La.) at her regional meet

Amy-Eloise Neale of Glacier Peak (Snohomish, Wash.) turned in the leading 1,500 time, 4:26.71 at the Jesuit Twilight Relays in Portland, Ore.

QUAD STATE MEET PERFORMANCE FOR SPRINT LEADER: Double U.S. sprint leader Octavious Freeman of Lake Wales, Fla., figured in four gold medals at the 2A state meet — in the 100 meters (11.77w), 200 (23.64w), long jump (18-10½) and 4x100 relay (46.34).

HOULIHAN'S DRAKE TRIPLE: Shelby Houlihan of East (Sioux City, Iowa) recorded an outstanding distance triple at the Drake Relays, including the No. 2 outdoor times of the year in the 800 meters (2:07.69) and 1,500 (4:29.26). Her third win was in the 3,000, 9:56.71.
