Former North Carolina State point guard Ryan Harrow confirmed to The Courier-Journal on Wednesday night that he is transferring to the University of Kentucky.
Harrow, a native of Marietta, Ga., will have to sit out one year because of NCAA transfer rules and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining, beginning with the 2012-13 season.
Harrow said UK coach John Calipari's history of developing point guards was not alone in shaping his decision.
"That had a lot to do with it, but I felt like I don't want to name any specific things," he said. "I wasn't trying to knock any other schools. I just felt that at Kentucky I would reach all the goals I want to achieve for now and later on."
Harrow averaged 9.3 points and 3.3 assists per game last season for the Wolfpack. He announced he would transfer after head coach Sidney Lowe stepped down under pressure.
"I just wanted to see what opportunities were out there," Harrow said. "I didn't really get to do the recruiting process the first time because I committed so early."
The 6-foot-1 Harrow visited Louisville, Georgia and Texas and also said he considered St. John's, although he did not visit the school in Queens, N.Y.
His decision could take UK out of the market for a point guard in the 2012 class. UK is one of several schools, including Duke and N.C. State, recruiting one-time U of L commitment Rodney Purvis of Raleigh, N.C.
