A day after Versus analyst Jeremy Roenick's on-air reference to San Jose Sharks center Patrick Marleau's performance as "gutless" went viral, Canadian-based NHL player agent Todd Reynold's Twitter comment about New York Rangers forward Sean Avery's stance on same-sex marriage is also creating a stir in the social media.

Reynolds tweeted: "Very sad to read Sean Avery's misguided support of same-gender 'marriage'. Legal or not, it will always be wrong."

Reynolds was referring to a video Avery made in support of the New Yorkers for Marriage Equality campaign: "I'm Sean Avery and I'm a New Yorker for marriage equality. I treat everyone the way I expect to be treated, and that applies to marriage. Committed couples should be able to marry the person they love. Join me in supporting marriage equality."

About a hour after his original tweet, Reynolds clarified his stance in a series of tweets: "This is not hatred or bigotry towards gays. It is not intolerance in any way shape or form. I believe we are all equal. But I believe in the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman. This is my personal viewpoint. I do not hate anyone."

Reynolds' firm Uptown Sports Management is based in Burlington, Ontario. Reynolds does not represent Avery, but he has several NHL clients, including the Nashville Predators' Mike Fisher, Ottawa Senators' Chris Neil and Minnesota Wild's Andrew Brunette.

Reynolds later went on TSN radio and expressed surprise at the reaction to his tweet.

"I feel that if Sean Avery or any other player can comment on one side of the discussion, then I work in hockey and I'm in hockey 24/7, why can't I comment on it as well?" he said.
