Mint condition Gretzky rookie card auctioned for $94,163

Thursday, May 5, 2011

A Wayne Gretzky 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee rookie card, graded as a Gem Mint 10, sold for a record $94,163 by California-based SCP Auctions Sunday.

According to SPC, this is the highest price paid for a hockey card. The Gretzky card (No. 18) was judged to be Gem Mint 10 by PSA grading company.

It is the perfect rating that attracted bidders: A PSA 9 graded Gretzky O-Pee-Chee rookie card is for sale on eBay for $8,000 or best offer.

The Topps version of the same card is worth just a fraction. A PSA-graded 8 1979-80 Topps Gretzky rookie card, which has the same front, is for sale for $459.00 on eBay.
